Three for Me - July 21, 2010

Posted on 21 July 2010 by Aaron

While there are literally dozens (sometimes hundreds) of new books that hit your local comic book shop every Wednesday - These are the three you can’t miss this week…

Amazing Spider-Man 638 - A few years ago, Peter Parker and Mary Jane ended their marriage. Okay, they didn’t, the devil did. Okay, not the devil, a certain Marvel Editor-in-Chief… But he used the devil, or at least Marvel’s closest equivalent in Mephistopheles. Willing to do anything to save his Aunt May’s life (who was dying from a gunshot wound intended for the then secret identity free Spider-Man); Peter and Mary willing allowed for their marriage to end. And, about everything that happened after it got retconned out of existence. Seriously, this was so epic a clean slate that even John Byrne stood up and said [censored]. Spider-Man readers have been pissed ever since. Many years, weakening sales, and fanboy letters later, Joe Quesada steps in to pen O.M.I.T., or “One Moment In Time”. What will happen? Anyone can guess. Some think OMIT sounds a lot of ADMIT. Some think it will simply tell another angle to One More Day (the devil divorce thing). Others are still too mad to even care. One thing is certain, the last few years have been rough for long time Spider-Man fans and you are gonna’ want to know what all the harrumphing is about with this title.

Scott Pilgrim 6: Finest Hour - The little indy book that could from writer / artist Bryan Lee O’Malley and Portland publisher, Oni Press, Scott Pilgrim’s quest to defeat the final evil ex comes to a conclusion. Scott Pilgrim made my Top-10 Graphic Novels of the 2000s and I’ve been waiting for years to sit down and power-read the complete journey. A simple concept, the ultimate Gen X / Y slacker decides to fight for true love (and adulthood, whether he likes it or not) against the Seven Evil Exes! O’Malley taps into our love of old school video games and pop culture obsession in his attempt to generate laughs and introspection in the reader. Poor Scott Pilgrim has been through a lot in his six-book journey. As many people are still new to this title, we’ll avoid any spoilers at this junction. Suffice to say, you are going to want to read the complete series before Edgar Wright and Michael Cera warp into the multiplexes in a few weeks - Hadouken!

True Blood #1 - IDW launches their newest franchise tie-in book, and what a grab it is! True Blood is arguably HBO’s biggest hit since The Sopranos - Will lusty and absurd vampiric traits make the transition from screen to page? Hmm… Take a look at these panel samples and tell me:

Yup, that is Sam lusting over a grease and rain soaked Sookie - complete with extra perky nipples and some Vampiro-Vision! What is the story gonna’ be about? Don’t know. Will the miniseries work into True Blood canon? Hell if I know. Will it draw in new comic book readers? Not a clue. Will you read the book out loud with Bill’s horrible accent whether you want to or not? You cannot help yourself. You are fanboy (or girl). You will read in character. SOOKIE!

Any of these books make it into Aaron’s Box for a pulling, or will another title surprise you? Tune in tomorrow on GeekintheCity Radio and Pulling From Aaron’s Box - In the meantime… Keep reading!
